Every year, Walter and Ethel embrace their tradition of attending the state fair. But this year, as Walter nears 87, a longing for one special experience consumes him.
Every year, Walter and Ethel made it a tradition to visit the state fair. Each time, Walter would say he wanted to ride in the helicopter. But, Ethel would remind him that it cost $50. Despite Walter’s persistent longing, Ethel’s response remained unwavering: “50 dollars is 50 dollars.”
As they strolled through the fairgrounds one year, Walter, now 87 years old, felt a sense of urgency. He knew time was slipping away and if he didn’t seize the opportunity, it might never come again. “Ethel,” he implored, “I may not have another chance. Let’s take that helicopter ride this year.” Yet, Ethel’s response remained unchanged: “Walter, you know the cost. 50 dollars is 50 dollars.”
Their conversation caught the attention of the helicopter pilot. He offered them a unique deal. He promised to take them both for a free ride. But, they had to stay silent. Any utterance would cost them $50.
Agreeing to the pilot’s terms, Walter and Ethel boarded the helicopter. Despite the pilot’s daring maneuvers and gravity-defying stunts, not a word escaped from either of them. Even when Ethel seemingly fell out of the helicopter during one of the pilot’s tricks. Walter stayed true to his commitment to silence.
Upon landing, the pilot commended Walter for his remarkable self-control. But Walter’s response revealed the true extent of his dedication to saving money. “I almost spoke up when Ethel fell out, but you know, 50 dollars is 50 dollars!”
