Sex is one of the most exciting topics in life, it is not only fun for most people, but is also supposed to be healthy – so healthy that some doctors even prescribe it. Three to four times a week is recommended – according to the doctors. However, some studies show that sex is not so optimal, at least not for everyone.
The more sex, the more health?
At the University of Bristol, England, a long-term study was conducted with the participation of 1000 male subjects between the ages of 45 and 59. The study took place over a period of ten years. The result of the study: The more sex someone has, the healthier the person is. However, there are also studies that show that sex is not so ideal for everyone, such as a 2016 study of 2204 people. In older women, it was found that the more often they had sexual intercourse, the less likely they were to suffer from cardiovascular disease. For older men, it was the other way around. They were more likely to have cardiovascular problems if they enjoyed themselves often ( 1 ).
Another study showed that women with depression had their immune systems weakened. This was due to frequent partner sex. In depressed men, on the other hand, sexual intercourse had positive effects on the immune system (2).
Masturbation with or without vibrator
Masturbation can be healing, as numerous studies have shown. In addition to stress reduction and all its health benefits, masturbating – especially with a vibrator – can have many other health effects. First and foremost, this includes strengthening the pelvic floor, because this effect alone eliminates or alleviates many complaints in the abdomen (of course, a vibrator can also be included in partner sex).
Sexual fantasies
Even sexual fantasies are already healthy. So you don’t even have to take action, instead women can close their eyes, lean back with pleasure, and indulge in exciting daydreams. Men, on the other hand, prefer to keep their eyes open – and for good reason.
When a man sees what he thinks is an attractive woman, his brain becomes active, especially the so-called reward system. So, when he looks at the woman, he feels rewarded in some way. In contrast to the woman, he does not manage to do this with a pure mental cinema.
A special magnetic resonance examination was able to show that the nucleus accumbens (an area in the forebrain, the “reward system”) shows increased activity as soon as a woman appears in the man’s field of vision that he likes. If he doesn’t like it, nothing happens in the male body, at least nothing that wouldn’t happen without a woman.
Even talking or flirting with a woman the man finds appealing leads to a physical reaction. He now focuses less on the conversation and has long indulged in sexual fantasies. In this situation, his brain produces more of the so-called LH (luteinizing hormone), as a study at the University of Chicago showed.
The LH stimulates the testicles to make testosterone. So, to raise your testosterone level, you need to enjoy relevant pictures or films. A practical side effect of increased testosterone levels is increased fat burning. At the same time, the fat cells now produce more leptin, a messenger substance that gives a feeling of satiety. So sex makes you slim and attractive.
Muscle building without side effects
However, testosterone is not a slimming agent. Testosterone is instrumental in building muscle. Thus, sex offers a great opportunity to promote muscle building without artificial hormones and thus also without side effects. Sexual intercourse provides the hormones for muscle building. It also gives the necessary muscle stimulus through rhythmic movement.
Even the sole erection – for example during a flirtation – is incredibly healthy and desirable. After all, every erection brings fresh blood to the erectile tissue. The penis becomes stiff and requent stiffening trains the penis, which further improves erectile function.
No sex without kisses
Kissing promotes saliva production – and good saliva production clearly has health benefits. For example, the saliva produced during kissing is very rich in type A immunoglobulins. These are the body’s own antibodies of the immune system that fight many pathogens, but are said to have a particularly intensive effect against caries bacteria, among other things.
Saliva also has the task of mineralizing tooth enamel. Therefore, of course, measures that promote salivation are also very helpful for dental health. The increased saliva production also lasts for a long time after kissing, so kissing can lead to beautiful teeth.
Take your time during sex
Apparently, sex only has health benefits if the activities last at least twenty minutes, as it is only now that the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine is stimulated and also noticeable. Dopamine causes an intense and lasting reduction in stress, so it is not for nothing that sexual intercourse is one of the measures of holistic stress management.
The release of endorphins also increases with the duration of sexual activity. These are substances similar to opium, which not only lead to a feeling of happiness, but also make you forget pain, and are particularly effective against headaches and joint pain. It is therefore anything but advisable to avoid sexual intercourse at all costs when you have a headache. Because it is clearly healthier than aspirin.
Good for prostate health
About 30 percent of a man’s seminal fluid is produced in the prostate gland. When reaching sexual climax, the wall muscles of the prostate gland contract and the seminal fluid is pumped into the urethra.
If the man suffers from inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis), each ejaculation now additionally promotes the flushing out of infectious germs from the lower urinary and sperm tracts. Thus, every ejaculation serves to cleanse the prostate.
To prevent the flushed germs from penetrating the woman’s vagina, the use of condoms is indicated in the event of a corresponding infectious disease in the man.
Sex without a condom is healthier
However, if men and women are healthy in every respect and condoms are not necessary or desirable for contraceptive reasons, it is better to avoid condoms. Intercourse without condoms is healthier – especially for women.
Sperm contains psychotropic substances, which in women can enhance the feeling of happiness that arises from good sex. These substances appear to work in this way when ingested either vaginally or orally.
Good remedy for falling asleep and for sleep disorders
After sexual intercourse, men in particular often show a strong tendency to fall asleep quickly. Responsible for this is the hormone oxytocin, which is a natural and intensive sleep aid. Also, after orgasm in men, the hormone prolactin, which makes you sleepy, increases. But even women don’t always stay cheerful after an orgasm. For them, estrogen levels rise after orgasm, which ensures deeper sleep.
And if you think you’re too old for sex. Then you are mistaken! It is true that there are often completely different needs and priorities when it comes to sexual intercourse in old age than in young years. But sex can still be tingling and beautiful even in old age. You can find out how to do this here: Sex in old age – It has never been better
Natures helpers
Now, of course, it may also be that you would love to have sex in order to be able to benefit from its health benefits, among other things, but unfortunately this only works moderately or possibly not at all for you or your partner.
In addition to consistent pelvic floor training, certain all-natural supplements can also be very helpful here and have a positive effect on potency and libido. The amino acid arginine is one of them, as is maca or capsaicin.
The medicinal mushroom Cordyceps is also considered a potency and libido-increasing natural remedy. Cordyceps promotes libido on several levels and counteracts potency disorders. The cordyceps medicinal mushroom, for example, promotes blood circulation in the penis, which can promote an erection. In addition, cordyceps increases semen quality and has a positive effect on hormonal balance.
In exploring sexual wellness, some individuals may find resonance with practices like Tantra, which delve into the sacred aspects of sexuality and its potential for healing and spiritual growth.
