THC and CBD – the difference
Phyto-Cannabinoids are found in Hemp flowers.
The two main phytochemical compounds classes are;
- Cannabinol – THC contained in various hemp varieties has a psychotropic effect and affects the psyche of humans.
- Cannabidiol – CBD contained in different hemp varieties has ‘no’ psychotropic effect and is made from cannabis strains that are virtually THC-free and at the same time very high in cannabidiol. The phytochemical properties Cannabidiol are anti-inflammatory, analgesic and calming or antipsychotic.
What are Cannabinoids?
In addition to cannabidiol, hemp extract naturally contains other plant substances from hemp flowers, such as flavonoids or terpenes, as well as more than 100 other substances from the class of cannabinoids. Although cannabinoids can be found in many plants, they are contained in hemp (cannabis), which gives them their name.
Unlike other cannabinoids, such as THC, CBD does not target the same receptors in the human brain. The reason cannabinoids from hemp can attach to brain receptors is because cannabinoids also exist in the human body, not only in the plant kingdom.
Human Cannabinoid Production

Hemp extract for joint pain
Chronic arthritis is one of the most common causes of disability in western countries. They affect more than 50 million people in the US alone. There is a distinction between arthritis and osteoarthritis.
While rheumatoid arthritis is one of the autoimmune diseases, as the immune system attacks the joints here – usually in the hands and feet – and thus leads to inflammation, osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease (“wear and tear”), predominantly at the hip, knee and thumb joints. Both forms cause feelings of stiffness as well as swollen and inflamed joints and thus also massive pain.

CBD oil combats inflammation and pain – Clinical Case Studies
CBD oil is not yet used in conventional medicine. However, the studies sound promising, so that those affected could dare to try in any case – especially because of the few side effects of hemp extract oil.
In 2011, a study found that CBD can fight inflammatory pain because it appears to directly affect the pain receptors.
In 2014, a review was published in which it was stated that CBD could be an effective treatment for osteoarthritis, as the cannabinoid receptors are present at the relevant sites and are involved not only in the regulation of pain and inflammation, but also directly to the joint functions.
Two years later, a study showed that CBD – applied externally to the aching skin in the form of a gel – has the potential to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. In one experiment, the gel significantly reduced joint swelling, morbid thickening of the synovium and its infiltration with immune cells (immigration of immune cells from the blood into the synovial membrane, indicating the autoimmune process typical of arthritis).
In 2017, another study found that CBD was a safe and useful way to treat joint pain caused by joint inflammation. In addition to a pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect, CBD also showed neuroprotective properties in this study. The nerve damage usually associated with joint disease sooner or later, and the consequent chronic neuropathic pain could be prevented.
THC-containing oral spray also relieves nerve pain
In 2006 a study was published in which it was discovered that oral spray (trade name Sativex) was able to relieve arthritis pain well. However, the spray is made from THC-containing hemp, so you have to wonder if it was actually the CBD that had stopped the pain, or rather the THC or both
The mouth spray is now legally available (but only on prescription, because it falls under the narcotic law) and is used primarily in spastic paralysis of multiple sclerosis, but also in neuropathic pain (nerve pain).

No habitual effects on CBD oil
CBD oil has a real potential in terms of pain relief and can therefore be tried in many diseases that are associated with chronic pain. The pain may not be completely contained, but at least the CBD oil can help reduce the dose of the usual painkillers, which alone would be an advantage, because unlike these, the CBD oil does not have serious side effects.
Furthermore, a study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine showed that CBD oil does not appear to have any habitual effects. With conventional painkillers, it is well known that some patients need to increase the dose over and over in order to have an effect. This is not the case with CBD oil and hemp extracts.
CBD stabilizes the psyche
As explained above, it has long been assumed that CBD – since it did not make high – does not affect the psyche of man. However, this is doubted in the meantime, since hemp extract oil can also have very positive effects on the psyche of some people. In contrast to THC, however, it does not lead to a kind of intoxication, but has a pleasant calming and stabilizing effect in nervous or anxious states.
In a 2012 study, the researchers wrote that cannabidiol was capable of antipsychotic activity. This means that it can block psychotic symptoms, eg. delusions, hallucinations, restlessness, etc. In the study mentioned, this effect was demonstrated by the fact that CBD was able to prevent those psychotic conditions that normally appear after taking high doses of THC.

Application of CBD
