Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder in women and puts an enormous strain on well-being. The affected women suffer from obesity, skin and hair problems, menstrual cycle disorders, infertility and much more. A reader reports how well a healthy diet can also lead to a significant improvement in the symptoms of PCOS.
Healthy diet for PCOS
We are always happy to receive testimonials from our readers that show how effective a healthy lifestyle and diet can be. In the following, our reader Joanna from B. tells you how her PCOS symptoms have improved thanks to a change in diet – and not only that: Her ovulation also suddenly occurred again.
PCOS for 10 years
“Dear Vitalis team! I would like to share my experiences with you regarding dietary changes and PCOS. I’ve been suffering from PCOS since I was 13 and have hardly ever had my period. In addition, there were many other illnesses: I constantly suffered from diarrhea, and since puberty I also suffered from a mild form of epilepsy, cellulite, dry hair, joint problems – I had so many health problems that I felt like a genetic misconstruction.
I was totally unathletic and constantly dissatisfied and unhappy. In addition, of course, there was overweight. I ate too much at every meal, especially unhealthy food – I loved cheese and butter, as well as anything that had to do with wheat flour. And of course sugar – preferably in combination with wheat flour in a moist cake…
While others ate a roll, a piece of cake or a plate of pasta, I always ate three. After every meal I had stomach pain, but I couldn’t stop before because I was so “in a feeding frenzy”. A few hours later, I often sat on the toilet with diarrhea and cursed my life.
No doctor clarifies the real connections
Neither I nor ANY doctor ever brought all these illnesses into connection with my unhealthy diet. And I’ve been to many doctors, believe me. At that time, unfortunately, I was still too “subservient to the doctor” to question the doctors’ judgment.
Fortunately, over time this changed – I became more and more concerned with nutrition, also due to my severe hypochondria and constantly changing health complaints. First I decided to become a vegan for ethical reasons, then I read about how healthy the vegan diet is at the same time.
From that point on, an avalanche started rolling – my family and I have been more and more involved with nutrition since then, learning more and more about healthy cooking. 28 days ago I decided to finally fight my PCOS because my last ovulation was in early July – I’m 22 now and I’m starting to fear becoming infertile. So I researched again extensively on the Internet – of course again in your library (I love your library and am a permanent guest here!).
Incredible results after a change in diet
I decided to eliminate not only dairy products and meat, but also everything with wheat or gluten and convenience products from my diet. The results of this change in diet are incredible. Within a week, my digestion stabilized enormously. The constant diarrhea attacks are a thing of the past, I can now rely on my digestion and no longer have to be constantly afraid of having to run to the toilet.
In addition, I feel much better psychologically. I’ve often had to deal with severe depression and anxiety attacks, but lately I’ve often been much happier and more optimistic than ever before. My anxiety attacks have become fewer, I am generally more relaxed and motivated to tackle my problems. I would never have associated this with nutrition!
In addition, I notice other changes that I would not have expected at all – in dealing with other people I am more relaxed and self-confident, in the morning I am awake and fit much earlier, I am much more thirsty throughout the day than before (I never drank much, not even a liter a day, just never was thirsty!).
My hair feels soft – for the first time in my life. I always had very strawy, brittle, unsightly hair, but now I like to run my hand through my hair. I would never have thought that this is also so directly related to nutrition. My excess weight has also been significantly reduced without me starving.
After 30 days of clean eating, ovulation again
And now to the biggest success: After less than 30 days of clean eating, I finally ovulated again! The last ovulation was, as I said, at the beginning of July, and even before that I could expect bleeding every few months, if at all. I am so incredibly happy about it, but at the same time I find it unbelievable and shocking what a big role the right diet plays in PCOS (and all the other diseases).
Shocking because most people, and especially doctors!! know NOTHING about it at all. Worse still, the vegan diet is even described by many as unhealthy! Society should learn that they eat themselves sick – and are not simply sick! And more importantly, that you can eat healthy!
I am so excited to see if my change in diet will lead to lasting success. But I’m very optimistic. And now I hope that my story strengthens you in what you do and write! Please keep up the good work – for me, the change in diet has changed my life! And I owe that to you and your great, evocative articles! I would like to thank you a thousand times from the bottom of my heart for this!!!!
Now I have the strength to resist unhealthy food
Through your articles I became aware of so much, so many things suddenly made sense – for example, why I was so addicted to gluten and casein – why it was (and still is) so difficult for me; to do without a morning cheese sandwich. I never questioned it, but now it seems quite clear and logical to me. Knowing this, I have the strength to resist unhealthy eating and continue to try new, healthy recipes. I hope you can continue to expand the site and become even more popular! Keep up the good work! Greetings from B., Joanna”
