Alkaline baths are part of many deacidification programs. They are intended to help eliminate excess acids and thus counteract chronic overacidification. To deacidify, you take a warm alkaline bath two to three times a week or, as a course of treatment, an alkaline foot bath daily.
Alkaline bath – little effort, big effect
Alkaline baths have been known for their healing effects for thousands of years. In the past, people traveled across the country to visit mineral baths, salt lakes or hot springs and take a relaxing and healing bath there.
Because who doesn’t know that pleasant feeling when you sink into warm water? Muscle pain, joint pain, and abdominal pain soon subside significantly. The tension disappears. Your vitality returns, and you feel like you’ve been reborn.
Alkaline bath for deacidification at home
How convenient that we now have our own hot spring in our homes and no longer have to travel for days just to take a well-deserved alkaline bath to deacidify. All you need is a bathtub and an alkaline bath additive to deacidify the skin. Add a candle or two, relaxing music, and a cup of herbal tea—and stress doesn’t stand a chance (1).
Alkaline bath made of minerals, bases and crystal salt
The basis for an alkaline bath is bath additives, which can contain several of the following ingredients:
- Minerals in the form of Sango sea coral
- Minerals in the form of basic carbonates, e.g. sodium hydrogen carbonate (soda), sodium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, etc.)
- Natural salt (e.g. crystal salt or sea salt)
Alkaline bath with Sango sea coral
The Sango sea coral is a natural source of alkaline substances, which is why it is also an important addition to many alkaline baths. It consists mainly of calcium and magnesium compounds, turning the bath water into an alkaline mineral water that is also good for the joints and brings relaxation for stress-related illnesses.
Alkaline bath with the stress killer magnesium
If you consume enough magnesium, you will be less susceptible to stress. This means that the stress-inducing stimuli from your environment will not trigger any or only a reduced stress reaction. With enough magnesium, you will experience deeper sleep, improved concentration, and optimized muscle and nerve functions.
When you take a bath, you naturally only absorb a small amount of magnesium through your skin. However, you still benefit from the magnesium content of the alkaline bath, as it prevents the skin from drying out too much, which is why the valuable mineral can help reduce flaking and itching in skin conditions such as neurodermatitis or psoriasis.
Magnesium can be included in the alkaline bath in the form of magnesium carbonate or magnesium sulfate (2) (3).
Alkaline bath with baking soda
Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, is a basic compound that is often used for deacidification. Sodium bicarbonate will increase the pH of your bath water.
An alkaline bath ensures that the skin is stimulated to deacidify, meaning that acids can be eliminated through the skin. For this reason, alkaline baths can accompany any comprehensive deacidification program.
Large amounts of acid are produced, particularly when we are stressed. If we regularly take alkaline baths to deacidify, these effects of stress can be eliminated again and again, so that an accumulation of acid waste and thus long-term health problems can be avoided.
Sodium hydrogen carbonate also promotes the skin’s own re-fatting and consequently ensures smooth and supple skin.
Alkaline bath with crystal salt or sea salt
Since ancient times, salt baths have been considered particularly helpful for skin diseases such as neurodermatitis, psoriasis and eczema.
But alkaline baths with natural salts are also recommended for rheumatic diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The natural crystal salt has a slightly antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect.
While bubble baths cause the skin to swell, alkaline baths with natural salt improve blood flow to the skin. The formation of flaking skin decreases, and itching subsides.
All about alkaline baths
In addition to the alkaline bath additive made from the three ingredients mentioned, you can add a few drops of your favorite scent in the form of pure, natural essential oils of controlled organic quality to the bath water. Lavender or lemon balm oil are best because they also have a relaxing and antispasmodic effect.
For a full bath in a normal-sized bathtub, 5 to 10 drops of the essential oil are sufficient. For round bathtubs, you may need more. First stir the essential oil into a little honey or lukewarm coconut oil and then add it to the bath water.
This comes before the alkaline bath
Do you love soft and delicate skin? Then choose an alkaline peeling once a week to use before your alkaline bath. This way you combine wellness, stress reduction, and bath therapy with beauty :). Apply the alkaline peeling, let it work for a short time, and then shower it off. Dead skin cells are removed, and the young skin cells underneath can breathe a sigh of relief. Then get into the bathtub for your alkaline bath.
How to take an alkaline bath
If you live in an area with heavily chlorinated tap water, you should ensure that you use filtered water for your alkaline bath. If you do not have a home filter installed, a special shower head with an integrated filter might be a solution. This not only filters out the unwanted chlorine but also pollutants from the water.
Make sure the water temperature is right for your alkaline bath. It should not exceed 37 degrees. Since the acid excretion through the skin only begins after 30 minutes, a bathing time of at least 40 minutes is recommended for an alkaline bath.
Alkaline baths can be used in times of great stress or during a deacidification program up to three times a week as a course of treatment (two to four weeks). After that, one alkaline bath per week is sufficient.

This comes after the alkaline bath
Alkaline baths provide deep and lasting relaxation. They are therefore ideal for a relaxing end to the day.
After an alkaline bath, a massage with massage oil is a good idea, for which organic coconut oil is also suitable. If there is no one around to massage you, then simply use the coconut oil instead of your usual body lotion or choose an alkaline body lotion.
Wrap up warm and let the evening end in peace. After an alkaline bath, avoid watching action films or similarly nerve-racking leisure activities.
What you should pay attention to if you have high blood pressure
If you suffer from heart problems, high blood pressure, or diabetes, check with your GP before taking a bath. In any case, you should make sure that the water is at a comfortable temperature (not too hot) and that you bathe for short periods of time (10 minutes).
Alkaline foot baths
Of course, you can also take a foot bath with the bath additives mentioned. To deacidify, take an alkaline foot bath every day for a period of time (e.g. for 2 weeks). The feet should remain in the water for at least 30 minutes.
According to reports, alkaline foot baths can even be helpful against nail fungus and athlete’s foot and can make them disappear if used consistently.
